Famous Signatures

Digital scanning is better than magic for museum archivists wishing to make good use of fragile, historic documents.

Among our prized possesions are papers bearing the signatures of Calvin Jones and Samuel Wait.

Jones established our community’s first post office before selling his 615 acre property to the North Carolina Baptist Convention, which planned to establish a school to educate young ministers.

Samuel Wait was that school’s first president, launching it on its steep trajectory from those simple beginnings as the Wake Forest Manual Labor Institute, to the heyday of Wake Forest College, and now the Wake Forest University we know today.
