The Wake Forest College Birthplace Society will hold this year’s annual meeting on Sunday, October 14th from 3 pm to 5 pm. Members will gather at the Wake Forest Historical Museum. The keynote speaker is Wake Forest University’s Dean of the College and Presidential Endowed Professor of Southern History Michele Gillespie, who will discuss the link between the Old Campus and New Campus, particularly the values each contributed to create the great university we know today–and how the gift of the estate from the Reynolds family helped make that happen.
Appointed Dean of the College in 2015, Gillespie is the author or co-editor of twelve books, including an in-depth history of the lives of R. J. and Katharine Reynolds, donors of the 300 acres of property that in 1956 became the New Campus of Wake Forest College.
Considered “one of the most articulate defenders of liberal arts” by University Scholar in Residence Michael Lamb, Gillespie emphasizes the importance of choice in a liberal arts education. She makes the case that a chosen major or minor is not the “bottom line” of the college experience, and feels a significant part of her job is to defend the inherent value of the type of education provided by an institution of the caliber of Wake Forest University.
Members who attend the annual meeting also will be invited to tour the exhibit gallery and the historic Calvin Jones House. In addition, a series of five outdoor exhibit panels, funded by a generous grant from the Jandy Ammons Foundation, have been added to the museum grounds. This event will provide visitors with a chance to stroll the brick pathways to view all five examples of newly installed educational signage.
We hope members plan to attend and that you will also consider continuing your support of the Wake Forest College Birthplace Society. It’s time to join or renew for the 2019 membership year. Levels have recently changed. For more information, please view our printable membership form HERE.
