1947 UNC vs. Wake Forest College

WFC 1947 Basketball Capture

In February 1947, Wake Forest’s Demon Deacons challenged the UNC Tarheels on the historic hardwood of Gore Gymnasium.

A photographer filmed the action with a 16mm camera. After the film was processed, it was handed over to the coaching staff for scouting and practice purposes. Then this particular copy landed in the hands of Carolina’s Bill Miller.

Miller, a star player who went on to a career in professional basketball and coaching, gave the game film to his daughter, Chris Ramsey. Ramsey preserved the thirteen minute film and generously shared it with the Wake Forest College Birthplace Society. The Society maintains a collection of filmed athletic events transferred to disc.

The two minutes posted here provide a rare glimpse into the world of old Southern Conference basketball, which led to the modern day ACC, as it was lived and played in the college town of Wake Forest.

  1. To whom it may concern,

I did some research on the Ledford Center Gore gym. I know that plans were drawn up in 1933 and built around 1934 – 1935. In 1936 a picture of the floor had a herring bone layout and the windows had a distinct T look. I have a picture of what it would have looked like if you are interested in seeing it. I think the basketball venue in this video is the old UNC basketball gym.

    1. Thanks Michael, we’ll review our information on this video. It’s an old scouting film made by a staffer at UNC. We also have some old film of the gym taken in 1939 and will double-check, making changes as needed. We appreciate your help!
